Economy - Zambia's main industries are construction, foodstuff, chemicals, textiles, horticulture, fertilizer, beverages, and copper mining. The government once owned the copper mines, incurring huge losses. The mines are now privatized, and this may improve the chances for copper mining to become profitable again. The inflation rate was over 20% after drought conditions in 2001-2002, but now is estimated at 8%. The per capita income is $870, and 86% of Zambians live in poverty.
